Paul Austin is a pioneering figure in the psychedelic space, founder of Third Wave, and creator of the Psychedelic Coaching Institute.

For nearly a decade, he's been at the forefront of bringing psychedelic education and responsible use into the mainstream, training practitioners and helping people harness these tools for healing and growth.

I was excited to have Paul on the show because his perspective on viewing psychedelics as a skill - similar to martial arts or any other practice we can develop mastery in - really resonated with me.

As someone who has had profound experiences with psychedelics that dramatically shifted my life's trajectory, I was curious to explore his framework for working with these medicines in an intentional way.

Maryn Azoff is a Vocal Transformation expert and teacher whose mission is awakening humanity's innate vocal capacity. After years as a professional singer, a profound spiritual experience at an ashram in Australia led her to discover the deeper healing and transformative powers of the human voice that ancient cultures have known for millennia.

I was excited to have this conversation because while I've explored many modalities for healing and transformation, the power of voice work is largely unexplored for me personally — and seemingly within in Western culture.

As someone who has experienced profound shifts through various practices, I was curious to understand how voice could be another gateway to expanded consciousness and wellbeing.

I love experiencing magic and pushing the boundaries for what’s possible.

It makes life more fun and interesting.

One of the ways this shows up is noticing extraordinary phenomena. These can be everything from unexplained synchronicities to directly experiencing extra sensory perceptions (ESP).

Most people write these off, chalking them up to random coincidence or flukes.

But some people get curious.

They wonder if they can recreate that experience in some way. So they start experimenting and exploring new things.

This gradually refines their understanding of what’s possible and results in new approaches to creating positive results in their life.

Today’s guest Cyan Banister brings this type of curiosity and experimentation to exploring consciousness and human potential.

Cyan is one of the most prolific early stage investors of our time having invested in SpaceX, Uber, Postmates amongst many others. She was the first female partner at Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and now is a partner at Long Journey Ventures

Abundance is a word that gets thrown around a lot, but it seems like everyone has a different idea of what it means.

For a lot of people, it means money.

Money is seen as a proxy for other things like time, freedom, and contribution.

I once held this view and now believe it’s a very incomplete perspective.

I was excited to have my friend Sean Clayton to talk about abundance because he has one of the more unique perspectives I’ve come across. Sean is a serial entrepreneur. He is the founder of Myosin and Myosin XYZ, as well the Science of Abundance which teaches people how to integrate ancient wisdom and spirituality to create an abundant life.

Instead of money, Sean views abundance as the energy that creates all things.

To live an abundant life, you can become aware of how this energy works and its fundamental laws.

Through working with and aligning to these laws, you can create an abundant life. When you go  against them, you simply cycle through repeated patterns that don’t represent the natural way of things which makes life more difficult.

A big influence on Sean’s perspective is the 7 Hermetic principles. These principles attempt to explain the nature of reality, consciousness, and the universe.

A lot of people think consciousness work is just a way to feel better.

With this perspective, the connection between inner work and external results is tenuous. Maybe having a better temperament will make you a better leader or manager and more easily able to avoid burnout, but that’s about it.

This is an incredibly limited perspective that misses the big picture.

Until you work on your consciousness, you’re mostly just operating life through a set of inherited patterns you didn’t choose.

This would be fine if they were all helpful, but most people’s unconscious patterns are oriented around avoiding harm and using the external world to get love.

So they perceive the world through the narrow lens of their patterns which direct all their activities.

This is why entrepreneurs raise money before they should, stay in businesses they don’t care about, and pursue opportunities that aren’t actually aligned with the needs of the business.

I was thrilled to meet another entrepreneur who sees this clearly and recognizes the challenges this can create in our current version of capitalism.

Dave Hersh is serial entrepreneur, founding CEO of Jive (NASD: JIVE), partner at Metamorph Partners, and author of the new book Reignition

In this conversation, we discuss how inner transformation can change the trajectory of your career and company.

Many of the guests I’ve had on the podcast have spoken about the benefits of going deep once you’ve found a spiritual path or tradition that resonates.

The argument is that depth results in more profound transformation than breadth or spiritual window shopping.

In my own experience, I have found this to be true.

However, I know there are other people out there that have a different perspective and received a tremendous amount of benefit from a more broad exploration.

Today’s guest is Kyle Kowalski, the founder of Sloww. Sloww is creating the web’s deepest guide to the world’s wisdom through an interdisciplinary study across diverse yet interconnected disciplines.

Kyle describes himself as a synthesizer. He has spent the last few years studying a tremendous amount of spiritual teachers and teachings with the goal of getting to the core essence of what they all point to.

In software development there’s a popular idea that there are 10X engineers.

A 10x engineer is capable of producing the impact of 10 engineers.

In my consciousness journey, I’ve realized there are 10X healers.

These people are capable of facilitating exceptional transformation and healing.

Although I believe we are always the ones doing the healing, it does seem like certain beings have an outsized capacity to help us.

Today’s guest Michael Leberknight is someone I consider a 10x healer. He has helped create some profound shifts in my life and I wanted to have him on the show to discuss the healing arts.

Michael’s healing journey began at what he calls a magic school.

Traditionally, mystery (or magic) schools have been places dedicated to the study and practice of esoteric teachings that are often kept outside the public eye. They’ve existed throughout history across various cultures and typically emphasize the development of consciousness, spiritual awakening, and metaphysical concepts.

I love hosting a podcast.

It’s an amazing way to explore interesting topics and learn from the wisdom of others.

A lot of these conversations provide information about emerging topics like subtle energy, the nature of reality, or self healing.

As interesting as these are, I’ll be the first to admit they can be a bit disconnected from the things that most people struggle with on a day to day basis. Challenges like changing habits, finding new friends, and being kind to yourself.

Today’s conversation is an exploration of the REAL with my dear friend Alex Hardy

Alex and I are kindred spirits. We both chased the tech entrepreneurship dream and fast living New York City lifestyle only to be underwhelmed by where it all led.

After selling his last startup to Docusign, Alex turned his attention inward to find deeper meaning and fulfillment. He’s spent the past few years exploring many facets of self discovery that have resulted in major transformations. With these inner shifts, his life has had to shift too which can be incredibly challenging.

Major shifts in consciousness can turn your life upside down.

Once the veil has been lifted from your eyes, you can’t unsee something.

Katie Deming was a leading radiation oncologist (cancer doctor) who for all intensive purposes was at the top of her field.

She studied at Duke, practiced for 16 years, and spent many years as leader in the broader healthcare system designing cancer programs in the Northwestern United States.

In 2020, her life shifted in a dramatic way when she had a shared death experience (SDE).

I had never heard of an SDE until connecting with Katie, but apparently it can be more common for people in the healthcare field.

A shared death experience is a phenomenon where a person who is not dying reports experiencing some aspects of the death process along with a person who is actually dying.

In our conversation, Katie shares what happened during this experience and how it changed her in ways she never anticipated.

She realized that she could no longer practice western oncology (cancer treatment) and that the western medical system had many things wrong.

This is a pretty big deal considering she had spent many years studying, establishing herself, and creating a certain lifestyle. Her decision created lots of dramatic upheaval that we discuss in our conversation.

The discussion also addresses the role of conventional mental health practitioners in facilitating psychedelic experiences and the unique considerations involved.

The conversation explores the intersection of Western therapeutic frameworks and psychedelic facilitation, highlighting the shift from directive to non-directive methods. Let’s face it. There’ a lot of A.I. doom and gloom right now.

This is especially the case in some spiritual circles.

On Youtube, I see all these people talk about how we are entering a man vs. machine war, or other types of metaphysical warfare.

I haven’t really spent much time looking into these things and I’m sure there’s degrees of truth to the concerns.

My immediate reaction when I see this type of rhetoric is that it reflects the pattern of polarized thinking.

Polarizing thinking is when you look at things from a black vs. white, good vs. bad, or right vs. wrong perspective. This constrains your vision from seeing a more complete, big-picture perspective and keeps you in separation.

I am excited to learn about what A.I. is enabling that seems supportive for humanity, alongside the legitimate concerns that warrant action.

I recently got a chance to sit down with Maverick Kuhn, one of the co-founders of Thyself.ai. Thyself.ai is an AI voice assistant that guides you through emotional work like internal family systems (IFS). Instead of having to wait to talk to a therapist every other week, you can use the app to guide you through IFS on demand.

The more I learn, the more it seems like this practice has existed in ancient cultures all over the world.

Recently I learned about the lost history of Iranian Mysticism from my friend Dr. Shauheen Etminan

Before Zoroastrianism developed, there were groups of people in present day Iran called the Magi. The Magi were wise men known for their spiritual ministry and practices related to astronomy, astrology, and interpretation of dreams. Apparently, the Magi used a substance called Haoma to access the collective unconscious and bring back the information to Kings and patrons.

I wanted to have Shauheen on the show to discuss what he’s learned about the Magi and their practices that can be applied to support us in modern times.

Shauheen is the founder of Ancestral Magi and VCENNA, a drug discovery company. Through his own healing journey, he became fascinated by psychedelics. His background in chemical engineering and being born in Iran, pushed him to study the role of these substances in ancient Iranian mysticism and eventually create a company that provides access to similar experiences.

It can be a very humbling experience to feel like you “did everything right” in your life, but you still don’t feel how you want to feel.

I know this feeling intimately.

It can be quite disorienting and can cause a lot of anger.

Today’s guest is also familiar with this experience.

Brandon Evans is a serial entrepreneur and CEO, & Co-founder of 1Heart. 1Heart is considered the gold standard ayahuasca experience and community for heart centered leaders that are seeking more fulfilling and purpose driven lives.

Before starting 1Heart, Brandon had built multiple successful tech startups. Despite checking many of the boxes that society told him would make him happy, he felt a void in his life. This sent him on a multi-year self discovery odyssey before eventually finding deeper meaning in starting 1Heart.

Once you start to tune into how consciousness works, you realize that you process reality through the information and stories you’ve been exposed to.

Stories about how the world works.

Stories about right and wrong.

Stories about what it means to be successful in our world.

All of these things create a fundamental basis for how we perceive the world.

Now that we live in the information age, there’s more stories than ever.

So the question becomes, how can we discern which stories are supportive (and real)?

I don’t think the way we’re going with A.I. is going to make this any easier…

Today’s guest Josh Schrei is someone I’ve gotten to know through his epic podcast The Emerald. He’s a master storyteller and lifelong student of the mythologies of the world. He also is a teacher and writer.

The idea that you could raise your consciousness really clicked for me the first time I encountered David Hawkin’s work.

His map of consciousness was the first unified model of consciousness I had seen.

It clearly articulated how all encompassing changes in subjective experience could occur. Our conception of self, life, God, and predominant emotional state could all shift simultaneously changing the lens through which we experienced reality.

These models can be fun to look at, but eventually the more interesting question is how can we make these shifts? Today’s guest provides some fantastic insight into this question.

Mickaela Grace is the founder of the Graceline Institute and Bridge11 Productions. She has spent over 25 years traveling the world to train with master elders in over 32 traditions while also translating this wisdom with the latest discoveries in modern science.

About 5 years ago, I was burnt out from my startup and not really sure how my budding interest in my consciousness evolution really jibed with my life setup.

My co-founder had recommended the 15 Commitments of Consciousness Leadership and in my desperation, I decided to give it a whirl.

From the minute I started reading the book, I couldn’t put it down. So many of the ideas and concepts were illuminating things in my experience that I didn’t really have the world to articulate.

Since that point in time, I’ve become a huge advocate of Conscious Leadership and all the work that the creators of the book the Conscious Leadership Group does.

Today I have the great honor of hosting Diana Chapman on the show. Diana is one of the founding Partner’s of CLG and authors of the 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership.

I have admired Diana and her work for a long time. Whenever anyone asks me about the connecting consciousness and spirituality to the business world, my default answer is to point people to all the work of the Conscious Leadership Group. They have a beautiful ability to translate concepts and practices that pull from deep wisdom into the business world in a way that enhances connection, creativity, and engagement.

“The nervous system of the organization reflects the nervous system of the CEO or leader.”

When today’s guest shared this quote with me, the truth behind it almost knocked me off my seat!

At one point inner work seemed like some nebulous nice to have in the business world.

Increasingly, cultivating attributes like emotional fluidity, somatic intelligence and awareness are becoming a competitive advantage.

If you want to perform at your best and amplify the work of the people around you, this type of work needs to be a priority.

Today’s guest Franziska Gonder coaches higher performing founders, CEOs, and investors on how to become embodied leaders so they can reach their full potential.

The ways leaders have traditionally operated have gotten us thus far and I think we all can agree, we need to evolve the way we do things if we want to move towards a more prosperous and harmonious world.

Once upon a time I was a biohacker.

I measured my biomarkers every quarter, performed targeted nutrition protocols, tracked my HRV, sauna’d, plunged, and even sunned my balls in front of red light each morning to increase my testosterone.

I guess I experienced some benefit from all these activities, but it all kind of became less interesting once I began understanding and focusing on my consciousness.

I started to realize and experience first hand that the information in my consciousness is what created and drove the functioning of the body.

It’s not to say that the physical stuff wasn’t important, but it just felt less primary relative to the ways in which my emotions, beliefs, consciousness patterns, and the concepts I held around the way the body worked impacted my experience.

The truth is both inputs matter.

It just feels like we live in a society that puts far more emphasis on the nutrition we feed ourselves a few times a day, relative to the information we’re constantly feeding ourselves.

Today’s guest David Hamilton is someone that hopes to change that.

David was once a biologist developing drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. He became fascinated by the placebo effect and the mind’s power to influence the body. Eventually, his conviction and interest in the mind-body connection became so strong that he decided needed to leave the pharma industry.

Will I lose all ambition if I really go all in on my self awareness and spiritual journey?

Is having ambition compatible with my continuous growth?

If I really go all in on this inner work thing and I am going to be POOR AND UNSUCCESSFUL!?

You’re essentially reading the monologue that replayed in my head in the early days of my consciousness journey.

The short answer to these questions: no.

Transformation can often be accompanied by polarized thinking.

For example, maybe at one point in our lives we were incredibly ambitious thinking getting things outside ourselves was going to solve all our problems. Eventually, we get the things, feel a transient sense of well-being, and realize the inherent conditionality and hollowness to this approach. At this point, we may swing in the other direction becoming obsessed with inner work while believing that anything that resembles your previous paradigm like ambition is bad or incompatible.

This is just a misconception created by polarized thinking.

How to find harmony between aligned ambition and self discovery is the core idea in today’s conversation with Joe Hudson. If you don’t know Joe, he is the founder of The Art of Accomplishment and executive coach to many well known entrepreneurs you’ve probably heard of.

Some people get into the deep exploration of spirituality and gravitate towards a reclusive experience.

This never resonated with me.

I was always interested in pursuing a deep inner exploration while simultaneously engaging life fully. This path leads you to life unfolding becoming the primary teacher.

I find myself attracted to people who have a similar disposition.

Today’s guest Peter Corbett is one of those people. After selling his last business to the world’s largest publicly traded marketing services company, Peter Corbett decided it was time to go sit in a Zen monastery.

Since then he has taken on roles such as coach, meditation teacher, spiritual caregiver, and community builder to name a few. I wanted to have Peter on the show because he’s a unique combination of someone with tremendous business success that has also gone to profound depths on the spiritual path. I also don’t have a ton of direct experience studying Zen and thought it’d be fun to go there with Peter.

In this conversation, we explore his experience with the Zen tradition and how he has helped himself and others integrate its wisdom into everyday life to improve well-being and fulfillment.

What if instead of subscribing prozac, the medical system provided mental health support by using cutting edge technology that dropped you into a state of equanimity and wholeness?

And then what if this was followed by an ongoing mindfulness protocol that made accessing it regularly part of your life?

This upgraded vision of helping people be happier and healthier was the crux of the conversation with today’s guest Jay Sanguinetti.

Jay is a scientist, professor, entrepreneur, and meditation teacher. He currently co-directs the SEMA Lab (Science Enhanced Mindful Awareness) with renowned teacher Shinzen Young and is the Assistant Director at the Center for Consciousness Studies at University of Arizona.

Shadows are unconscious distortions that undermine our experience. Example shadows include limiting beliefs, unhealthy patterns, suppressed emotions, small and big traumas.

When I realized my life was quietly being directed by unconscious patterns and concepts, I became obsessed with uncovering and healing my shadows.

This went on for a few years. I experienced a lot of growth but also realized that there is actually a shadow to shadow work.

I’m a bit older and maybe a smidge wiser now, and continue to learn about the vast nuances of working with the unconscious.

Today’s guest Kim Barta has helped expand my perspective and understanding of shadow work. Kim’s background as psychotherapist and teacher has culminated in him developing several new forms of therapy and models for human understanding including the evolution of shadow resolution and the stages model of human development.

I’m glad that there’s a seemingly growing contingency in the scientific community who feel deeply inspired to help us better understand consciousness in the language of Science.

It’s an important step in human development and will be imperative for consciousness expansion to be embraced by the mainstream.

Today’s guest is one of those people. Andrés Gómez-Emilsson is the founder of Qualia Research Institute (QRI). QRI seeks to formalize the math behind our subjective experience and its emotional valence in order to map the  state-space of consciousness. One way you can think about this is that all states of being are just different expressions or configurations of underlying math.

The bet is that understanding this math can help improve the human experience. Broadly speaking, I think anything that helps us see and understand ourselves more clearly is generally supportive. So I find approaching this from the vantage point of math vs. direct experience to be quite interesting.

Life has probably never felt more frenetic and speedy for humans than it does today.

Technology and culture have made it easy to always be on, always be productive, always be improving ourselves, and always be running to the next thing.

Underlying this behavior is the idea that more and faster is what’s going to create the best experience and outcomes.

But is that true?

I think it behooves us to take stock on how this narrative is actually playing out for our well-being and prosperity.

And are there times in life when it is particularly useful to slow down?

Today’s guest Steve Schlafman thinks so. Steve is the first boomerang guest I’ve had on the show. This time he is coming back to talk about Downshift, the world’s first decelerator for high performers.

Steve has been a leader, investor, and coach in the world of startups and technology. More recently he has focused on helping higher performers in periods of transition.

I am honored to bring a very special guest to the EvolutionFM today.

Today’s guest is Ron Michael. Ron is the founder of Ascension Keys and is someone who has had a big impact on my life.

In 1993, he had a near death experience. While he floated above his body and went towards the light, he was told if he chose to come back, he would help usher in a new paradigm of how we looked at the frequency, resonance, and the human organism. When humans embraced the new paradigm, it’d help us far enhanced states of being.

We did this podcast, so Ron obviously decided to come back!

Energy, Qigong, Kundalini, + how it can shift our experience

An essential part of consciousness evolution is finding other people you can relate to.

It helps us realize we’re not alone and has the ability to refine our understanding of our experience.

Today’s guest is someone I have some shared experience with. Master Kambo has spent the past 20 years exploring and deepening his understanding of the metaphysical arts which he now teachers others. He is the founder of The Mind of Matter and Kamotion Qigong.

A formative part of his experience was his Kundalini awakening which began in 2015. In this discussion we talk about how this process unfolded and how impactful learning to work directly with our primordial energy can be.

Life is kind of funny in that pretty much everyone is trying to do the same thing - create a good experience.

Yet we all run around with such profoundly different ideas of how to do that.

The central idea in today’s conversation is the art of creating a good experience.

Our guest is Burgs, the founder of the art of meditation. I first discovered him through this beautiful Mt. Wolf track a few years ago. Since then he has become one of my favorite teachers to listen to Spotify.

Like many teachers, Burgs life took him to Asia where he studied and practiced under the guidance of some of the world’s greatest living masters. He moved back to England at the request of one of his teachers where he has been teaching meditation for the past 25 years.

We live in a time where there are many paths to increasing our awareness.

The information age has really changed the game for those who feel called to go on the journey of self discovery and realization.

The people I know who seem to have went the deepest, usually try a bunch of things and then eventually commit to one tradition or pathway to really focus their energy. This focus creates a capacity for depth that seems to be harder when people are dabbling in many things.

Today’s guest Delson Armstrong is quite unique in that he has been verified to reach the highest levels of many different systems. Verification is when someone like a master within a tradition provides confirmation of your depth of experience.

He has mastered the levels of Samadhi mentioned in the Yoga Sutras, received the six degrees of kriya under the lineage of Hariharananda, as well as the seven degrees of kriya under the lineage of Panchanon Bhattacharya. He has also mastered the eight jhānas and attained the ability to entered into the state of Nirodha Samapatti or cessation.

As a Dhamma teacher and author, this diversity of depth and experience is incredibly rare and gives him a unique perspective to guide students on their path to deeper awareness and realization.

And the inner gold that comes with it

I was recently in a text thread about how to find truth in our current times?

There has never been more people with microphones in history telling us how to live, what to believe, and what is happening in the world.

Although this diversity of information has created an immense amount of opportunity and freedom, it’s also made discernment more important than ever.

This is true whether we’re trying to understand what’s happening in the world or the wisdom we choose to follow for our growth.

Today’s guest Nadine Kreisberger has a unique perspective on this topic. As a counselor and consultant on her own journey of self exploration, she has spent the past 25 years studying many wisdom traditions, psychology, and geopolitics to help herself and others discover what she calls “the inner gold.” The inner gold is our deepest essence and gifts that we come into this experience to discover and contribute.

I think a lot about how to integrate working on consciousness in the business world.

Some people view these things as best kept separate, but this idea or path never resonated with me.

If we’re going to spend so much time in the working why not use that as an opportunity for Self discovery?

A lot of people think we are going through a shift in human consciousness. Many people think this is a necessity if humans want to continue to live here. I agree with both.

The question is how do we usher in a more harmonious way of being and society? If consciousness is part of the solution, I don’t expect large portions of the population to all of a sudden become renunciates. It seems like we’re going to need more and more efforts to integrate consciousness work with existing parts of life like work in ways where the sum is greater than the parts.

I love learning about this intersection and people who are pushing it forward. Today’s guest Scott Shute is doing exactly that. Scott is the co-founder of Changing Work and was the first head of mindfulness and compassion at LinkedIn.

His story is a powerful one that demonstrates how our calling often starts as a seed in an unexpected place before it can blossom into something bigger. Scott was a customer operations executive who volunteered to host a meditation session at LinkedIn for employees. One person showed up to the first session. But he kept at it he was still VP of Customer Operations and gradually he became known inside the company for leading meditations. Eventually this turned into a full time position pioneering mindfulness and compassion internally at LinkedIn.

A convo with my dear friend Mark on playing the non-linear space

What if success wasn’t just about picking good bets, making good decisions, and working hard?

This is the traditional narrative and I’ve come to believe it’s missing an integral part of the pie. Oftentimes, this can lead us to what today’s guest calls “counterfeit success” where everything on the outside looks great, but their personal lives and inner experience is a different story.

Today’s guest is my dear friend Mark Krassner. Mark Krassner is a 2x founder and executive coach who brings a fresh approach to the art of achievement, contribution, and fulfillment.

As a coach, he began to notice a distinct pattern where some of his clients toiled away following the traditional narrative achieving mediocre results while others seemed to experience wild success with flow and ease.

How Vibes Shape our world.

I see the world of energy (Qi) as the next frontier for many fixtures of the human experience.

Many traditions, including RenXue where I have studied for the past 4 years, see Qi as the fundamental building block of reality.

The more we understand it through widely accepted means like Science, the more humans will be able to work with it to create a more compelling experience.

Today’s guest scientist and author Garrett Yount has been studying energy and its impact on healing for the past 20 years. His interest began when he started to experience clairvoyant phenomena as a child. This eventually led him to a career in advancing our understanding of molecular neurobiology, consciousness and extended human capacities. Through his research he has performed extensive experiments with spiritual healers and biofield practitioners from around the world.

His new book Why Vibes Matter: Understand Your Energy and Learn How to Use it Wisely covers in depth his experiences as a researcher in this field and the large body of available research on the subject.

What if learning who we are creates a more fulfilling life than getting what we want?

I heard this question posed on a podcast with today’s guest and it pretty much sums up the entirety of my experience over the past few years. Nothing has been more enriching than the deeper exploration of the nature of Self and learning to embody that more fully so that it can be expressed in the world.

Today’s guest is Joe Hudson, founder of the Art of Accomplishment platform and executive coach.

Highlights of the episode for me were:

  • Why making life and business spiritual practice is so compelling

  • How you can think about creating a container in the business world that fosters spiritual growth

  • Why many companies fail at creating thriving businesses that help employees grow

  • The power of letting go of trying

Why is it that we can be doing something, and our mind starts to think about something else involuntarily?

Is this a helpful part of the human experience? A nuisance?

There are some people I just love listening to talk.

Today’s episode is one of those people.

David Perell is an entrepreneur, writer, and creator of the renown online course Write of Passage which helps aspiring writers transform their lives by writing online.

A lot of people know David on the internet because of his prolific writing and content creation, but what I was interested in learning about is how the shifts in David’s personal and spiritual life fuel his creative endeavors.

In this conversation we talk about David’s journey with his faith and how it’s empowered him to be a better leader and step even more deeply into his purpose. It feels like many people I talk to these days have difficulty feeling aligned with their purpose. A big part of my personal hypothesis is that uncovering this is a process that occurs naturally once you begin to do the inner work and remove the impediments that make it easy to embrace what you love.

Today’s guest is Stephen Zerfas, the Co-Founder and CEO of Jhourney.

Five years ago Stephen found himself crying tears of joy after stumbling into a prolonged state of ecstatic bliss on a meditation retreat.

Up until this point, most of the retreat was migraine-inducing so he wasn’t sure how he had landed in this profound place. After the retreat, he was interested in how to recreate this experience whenever he wanted. Through many months of personal experimentation and research, he realized that these states are available to all humans on demand. In fact, you don’t even need to be a long-time meditator!

In this conversation, we discuss the Jhanas and how Jhourney is going about making them more accessible. Interesting ideas include:

  • An overview of the Jhanas and why we should care

  • How meditation as far as what has been brought to the West is still largely unexplored

  • The history of why these experiences went from very popular to obscurity and are now emerging yet again

  • The different schools of insight including dry vs. wet insight

  • His learnings collecting the largest scientific dataset on Jhana meditators in the world

  • How technology can enhance this age-old tradition

  • Arguments against pursuing the Jhanas and his response

  • How access to the Jhanas has the potential to change the world

Today’s guest Sarah McCrum is the author of the book Love Money, Money Loves You. Sarah’s background was that she studied energy with Chinese masters for 20 years eventually opening a Qigong center in London. In 2010, she experienced spontaneous contact with the energy of money and began to receive information about its essence and what it wanted to communicate to humans. She began to transcribe this information and eventually, it became the contents of her book.

Although this may sound like an absurd idea to many people, channeling is responsible for many profoundly impactful books such as A Course In Miracles which we covered in an earlier podcast. The idea is that all things are made of energy, including beings and energies on higher planes, and if we can open to and connect with these energies we can begin to receive and transmit information. This is the same exact way a radio works.

I’ve read Sarah’s books and the ideas are pretty revolutionary. It really makes you question everything you thought you knew about how money works. Some concepts it covered which we discuss in this episode include:

  • How money is actually in unlimited supply

  • Its purpose to facilitate exchange, connection, and expansion

  • The role of relaxation and enjoyment in aligning with the flow of money

  • How it’s not inner abundance vs. outer abundance, but both

  • Why so many of us are unconsciously blocking money from flowing into our life

  • Why spiritual teachings about money cause many people unnecessary difficulty

  • How to find love and joy in money

Our society is obsessed with self-improvement. This was a major feature of how I related to reality for most of my life. As helpful as self-improvement can be, it also has a major shadow side that largely goes unexamined.

Implicit in the pursuit of self-improvement is that there is a deficit; that whatever or however your being is in this moment is not whole or complete. This keeps you grasping in a seemingly endless treadmill without ever reaching an enduring sense of completion or fulfillment.

Most people don’t really even know there is an alternative to the self-improvement paradigm. This is one of the main topics of today’s conversation with Steve March, the founder of Aletheia Coaching

Some of my other favorite ideas include:

  • Why self-improvement on its own can be a trap

  • Striking the balance between self-improvement and self-unfoldment

  • How to practically embody a more unfoldment experience

  • Understanding how solutions and support often arise when we allow them vs. exert force

  • How shifting our attunement and unfoldment might be an answer to our current metacrisis

Imagine having access to a source of guidance that could tell you exactly what’s needed at any moment for your highest good in all parts of your life. I honestly can’t think of a more valuable resource!

According to today’s guest Laura Coe, this is a potential for all humans by accessing what’s called the Akashic records. The Akashic records are like an energetic database that stores all the information from every thought, emotion, and experience we’ve had in all of our lives as a soul.

In this conversation, we discuss:

  • What are the Akashic records and how we can work with them

  • The potentiality for anyone to access this inner technology

  • The relationship between intuition, soul, and the Akashic realm

  • Moving from striving to accomplishment from flow and oneness

  • The difference between fulfillment and success

One of those people early on in my startup journey was Leo Widrich, one of the founders of the social media company Buffer. At one point, Buffer was a darling in startup land with their great product, prolific blog and a culture of transparency that gained them lots of notoriety.

I remember reading about their co-founder split and kind of never heard much about Leo again. I’m not exactly sure how, but somehow I found myself on his website 6 months ago and learned that he’s been on a similar journey of inner discovery. After “making it in startup world” Leo went to live in a Buddhist monastery for a few years. In this conversation, we talk about his experience going from the frenetic world of startups to living a monastic lifestyle. He shares a lot about the experience of facing his unconscious inner material which I related to immensely. Post monastery life, he found himself coaching startup founders who were experiencing similar challenges and dissonance that he had gone through. This article on lessons learned coaching 101+ startup founders resonates immensely. One of the things Leo recognized is how company building was actually an unconscious way he was trying to experience community. We talk about this recent revelation and his newest adventure which is building his intentional co-living community Wild Life Ranch in Colorado. If you’re craving an intentional co-living community experience, you might want to check it out! Other interesting talking points:
  • What living in a monastery is actually like

  • The impact of somatic therapy on his life

  • Why fear is such a valuable experience and how we can meet it when relating to others

  • His vision and motivation for the ranch

  • The meditation experience that caused him to change his name from Leo to Mo Wildman

Ryan is an accomplished entrepreneur who spent 10 years building VNN, the largest, fastest-growing high school sports marketing and media network in the United States. He’s since moved into the world of executive coaching starting his firm Inside-Out Leadership which is the only coaching firm that I know of completely comprised of exited founders who also integrate consciousness work.

I find Ryan to be an incredibly thoughtful guy and compelling speaker which is why I was excited to have him on the show.

In this conversation, we unpack how and why developing a more effective relationship with shame can be such a profound unlock for improving your life and leadership ability. This exploration bleeds into how to increasingly move towards emptiness so that you can meet life as spacious awareness.

Today’s guest is a fascinating and inspiring example of expanding beyond an old identity to step into something deeper.

Mona Sobhani was a hard-charging neuroscientist who at one point looked at spirituality as a coping mechanism for people who couldn’t cut it in the real world.

Through an unforeseen series of direct experiences and deep exploration of scientific evidence, she gradually transformed her worldview and began to embrace the ineffable mystery that is spiritual life. Her book Proof of Spiritual Phenomena shares her experience as well as the mountain of scientific evidence that substantiates what many ancient wisdom teachings have been saying all along.

In this conversation, we talk a lot about the interplay of scientism and spirituality. Some interesting talking points for me include:

  • Why much of the science community continue to overlook or turn away from the compelling evidence surrounding spiritual phenomena and their potential impact on the human experience

  • How to skillfully navigate shifts in identity and transformational conflicts

  • Making it through a dark night of the soul

  • Finding your tribe as you make these changes

  • How Science and spirituality can exist harmoniously

I recently came across the work of author, illustrator, and creator of LifeExplained Hans Wilhelm.

Hans does a fantastic job simplifying and distilling topics about how Earth is a school for the evolution of our consciousness and how reality is actually orchestrated for this purpose and many other interesting stuff on his YouTube channel and Website. He also has written over 200 children's books including a bunch that explain spiritual concepts.

In this conversation, we dive deep into the big question that occupies many of our minds: why are we here? How do we make the most of this experience?

To answer this question, Hans helps illuminate the laws of Karma and how they show up in our everyday lives. As I’ve talked about in the responsive reality, we come to see that there is an intelligence that brings us the perfect choreography of experiences needed to return us to our divine state. This process is a gradual realization vs. addition.

In addition to this overarching concept, we also discuss:

  • Lightworkers - what are they and how are they doing

  • The difference between knowledge and wisdom

  • How to find meaning in what can feel like trying times

  • The purification spheres

  • The importance of forgiveness and repentance

  • Educating children on spirituality

Today’s guests are Nicco Reggente and Leo Christov-Moore from The Institute for Advanced Consciousness Studies. The IACS is trying to make these life-altering experiences available to more people by better understanding what goes into meditative and entheogenic experiences so that we can find additional, more accessible entry points using modern technology. Through a better understanding of both the mechanics of what creates these states from how our brains change, to traditional components like the role of a facilitator and set and setting, they hope to make attaining positive behavior through these states accessible to the masses. Right now their research focus is on enhancing meditation, neuromodulation, and technodelics.

This conversation is wide-ranging and builds upon past conversations I’ve had on the latest Neuroscience of Meditation. Some highlights include:

  • Why their research lab is set up like a startup vs. typical academia

  • The current state of using ultrasound to induce altered states

  • What Technodelics are and why they are exciting

  • Where they see the biggest opportunities to make entheogenic experiences more accessible

  • Their principal first approach to understanding the deeper why behind the impact these states create

  • What they learned as researchers at a week-long Joe Dispenza event

  • Considerations for the early exploration of “shared consciousness” capacities

Today’s conversation dives deep into the realm of the soul and the initiatory experience.

Brooks Barron is a leadership coach and wilderness guide. One of the reasons I was excited to chat with Brooks is the formative role nature plays in his work helping people make contact with their soul and bring its expression into reality.

In this conversation, we talk about the pan-cultural tradition of the initiatory process and why it can be so impactful in our growth journeys. We explore how multi-day fast vision quests in nature can create a container for soul initiation.

I first heard the term "cerebrospinal fluid" about four years ago during a Joe Dispenza course. I remember doing meditations that had me squeeze my perineum to try and move the fluid up my back into my brain.

I encountered it again when I studied breathwork, and then my cranial sacral therapist would talk about it. It has continued to hover around my sphere for years, and finally, I decided I needed to go deeper and figure out what I needed to know about cerebrospinal fluid. I encountered the work of Dr. Mauro Zappaterra in this way.

Mauro has spent the past 20 years studying the impact of cerebrospinal fluid on human functioning. He received his MD/PhD from Harvard, where he studied neuronal stem cells and the effects of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) on brain development in adults. His work has been published in numerous scientific articles on CSF, and it was chosen as the cover image for the prestigious Neuron Journal. He is also the author of several children's books that make consciousness teachings accessible to kids, such as I AM, All One, and All One.

Mauro is one of those amazing consciousness explorers who are pushing the boundaries of science to help explain some of the greater mysteries of the human experience while improving well-being.

In this episode, we go in-depth on cerebrospinal fluid and its effects on the human body and potential implications for consciousness.

This is a conversation with Humanity's Team co-founder Steve Farrell on his unconventional and inspiring journey from successful entrepreneur to uplifting human consciousness.

In the 1990’s, Steve Farrell had started two high flying Silicon Valley businesses respectfully doing $75 million in revenue when he recognized his call to serve humanity. By all traditional definitions he had “made it,” but recognized that his soul’s purpose for coming into this plane was more then just being a serial entrepreneur.

He left Silicon Valley and started his non-profit Humanity’s Team with Neale Donald Walsch, author of the seminal book series Conversations With God.

Humanity’s team’s mission is to make conscious living pervasive by 2040 by helping educate people throughout the world to awaken to the interconnectedness and oneness of everything. Over the last 20 years, they have created the #1 non-profit in transformational education bringing together some of the biggest spiritual leaders, scientists, and educators in the world.

Is it possible to live life in a state of play, grow spiritually, and build the life of your dreams all at once?

This is a question I have spent many years pondering.

Our guest today, Victoria Song would answer this question with an emphatic YES! For a long time, I thought there was a polarity between these things, but this is something I no longer believe.

This has to be one of my favorite conversations since starting the show. It was just one of those conversations where there was a strong vibe, and I left feeling electric.

Victoria is someone I met back in the tech industry when she was working in Venture Capital. From here, she went on to become a leadership advisor and coach working with everyone from billionaires and high flying CEOs to creatives at the top of their field. She is also the author of the book Bending Reality which shares many of her most effective tactics she’s field tested with her clients.

“I think we’re going to see a lot of people who are half professional, half shaman in the coming years.”

This was a soundbite from the recording of this week’s episode with my guest Jake Housdon. As the expansion of consciousness becomes more popular, I agree with the idea that people are going to live a more integrated experience.

Jake and I are kindred spirits in some ways in that we both spent a decade+ working in startups and are now seeking ways to blend consciousness evolution with being a modern professional.

Jake has an inspiring and courageous story. He was a sales leader in the startup world for the past decade and left that life to buy a retreat center in Peru, embark on becoming a shaman, and create an ecosystem dedicated to serving the conscious professional.

In this episode, we talk about his mystical story of how he ended up where he is today and the windy path it took to get there. We went deep on many of the polarities that one can encounter while trying to be an earnest seeker, yet also someone who accomplishes in the working world. As someone who has oscillated on both sides of the pendulum quite a bit, I appreciated his wise perspective.

What’s Unique About The Mental Health of Entrepreneurs?

Starting and running a company can be HARD.

And when you look at the odds of success, you realize you gotta be a little crazy to do it. Many times during my own experience, I’ve reflected on how if I knew how hard it was, I’m not sure I would have done it. I’m finding the same thing can be said about embarking on the path of spiritual evolution btw! Apparently, I like hard shit.

So what is it about entrepreneurs that make them do the things they do?

Are they fundamentally different from the average bear? And what implications does this have for their mental health and well-being?

This is the nature of my conversation with today’s guest Dr. Michael Freeman. Dr. Freeman serves as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and as a Mentor in the Entrepreneurship Center at UCSF. With support from the Kauffman Foundation, Dr. Freeman has conducted extensive research into the mental health of entrepreneurs. Freeman studies issues related to entrepreneur mental health in collaboration with colleagues from U.C. Berkeley, the Gallup Organization, and other universities. Additionally, he was the founding Chief Medical Officer at U.S. Behavioral Health and the Founder of Econa, the global center of excellence for entrepreneur mental wellness.

I love synchronicity.

Not just because it’s fun when it happens but because it serves as a clue to the fact that there is something more going on here than the story we’ve been told about reality.

The answer to what causes synchronicity will vary depending on who you ask.

I have my own ideas, but I wanted to see who out there has done extensive research on the topic.

This is how I came across today’s guest, Dr. Bernard Beitman. After studying at Yale and Stanford, Dr. Beitman went on to become the chair of the psychology and neuroscience program at The University of Missouri. He has also published multiple books, including Meaningful Coincidences, and started a non-profit called the Coincidence Project which seeks to better understand and educate the world on why and how coincidences occur.

Altered states of consciousness are going mainstream. This episode is a deep dive on the startup ecosystem with my friend Greg Kubin who an investor a Psymed Ventures. We recorded this conversation as a followup to a longer post covering the startup ecosystem related to expanding human consciousness.

Startups will play a key role in enabling and expanding access to altered states of consciousness. The types of companies come in many flavors – hardware, software, and community. Technology could even result in accessing completely new states of consciousness.

But first… how do we define consciousness?

Most humans live in a state of normal waking consciousness – i.e. being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and physical surroundings. For most people, this is seemingly all there is to reality, maybe  except for dreams. In contrast, altered (or “alternative”) states of consciousness enable us to experience additional levels of awareness, perceptions, memories, thinking, emotions, sense of time, place, and self-control (source). In the process, they expand our understanding of the potentials of reality and the human experience. There are a variety of reasons people seek altered states: improved mental health, physical healing, creative breakthroughs, and spiritual connectedness. There are also risks – without proper support, altered states can be destabilizing.

“Our normal waking consciousness . . . is but one special type of consciousness, whilst all about it, parted from it by the flimsiest of screens, there lie potential forms of consciousness entirely different. We may go through life without suspecting their existence; but apply the requisite stimulus and at a touch they are all there in all their completeness” - William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience

Consciousness is subjective. This means, for the most part, we only know what it feels like inside our own inner space.

So how do we move beyond our limitations if our only reference point is our subjective experience? Well, one way is to have a map of all the different potentialities available to humans and clear directives on how to experience them.

This is the subject of today’s episode with guest Trish Blain. Trish is the founder of Nonordinary and the author of The Four Forces book. She first got on my radar with her work helping previous podcast guest Alexander Beiner who she worked to navigate the extended state DMT trials.

In this conversation, I think Trish stimulates some interesting ideas around how we can move beyond our limitations and then look to embody these ecstatic states in union with others. I think one thing that resonated with me is how even amidst many people doing their inner work, more expansive states of being are often investigated and understood in isolation. This presents a challenge when we are looking to co-create more expansively. One way Trish proposes that we overcome this is the creation of a shared understanding and map of human experience. This is the crux of a lot of her work with The Four Forces framework and the Edges Map

I went on a men’s retreat a few months ago called Junto and realized that there were some major growth opportunities for me in the outer expression of a lot of my inner work.

What this retreat made me realize is that I’ve spent less time on learning how to effectively communicate and express these experiences in many relationships in an elegant and authentic way.

Today’s guest is Andrew Horn -- the creator of the Junto retreat experience, founder of the tech company Tribute, and a leadership coach & facilitator.

In this conversation, we talk about relational leadership and the practicalities of what that looks like in our day to day experience. A big takeaway for me is that even when we work on our consciousness, we often don’t have many tools we need to be fully expressed as humans. Andrew shares many of his favorite tools that he uses in his own life and the people we work with.

We, humans, are a funny bunch.

Sometimes it feels like we think we have it all figured out only to later understand how the way we’ve been doing things needs some rethinking.

Life is a series of transitions.

This truth is something I’ve increasingly realized on my consciousness journey. I once thought there was a destination to get to. At first, this was becoming a wildly successful entrepreneur and then an enlightened being. I now see that there are no endpoints and that the process of evolution is one that continues to infinity. Inherently, this means we will need to continuously reinvent ourselves and I believe this is something we can learn to do with greater skill and ease.

This reality is one reason I was excited to have a conversation with my good buddy Schlaf, the transition coach and the brains behind Where the Road Bends. Steve and I got to know each other as “hustlers” in the early days of the New York Tech scene. If there was anyone who was out there buying more coffee and trying to rub elbows with the right people more than me back in the day, it might have been Steve!

Sean Reagan is a teacher of A Course In Miracles and today’s guest on EvolutionFM.

Like many of us, Sean had tried following many other pathways from Buddhism to Catholicism to have more persistent peace and joy in his life. Eventually, he stumbled across A Course In Miracles and things shifted in an amazing way.

The book was created by Helen Schulman from 1965 to 1972 via a direct channeling from Jesus Christ according to the author (source). Ironically, the author was an atheist psychologist leading up to “inner dictation” as she put it.

Since the book was published it has helped an incredible amount of people find peace and healing through its daily devotional style of teaching.

One of the core concepts is that many of the things that cause our suffering such as fear are not actually real. These are simply misperceptions that have to do with the false identification of yourself as a body. I have come to experience many of these great truths in my own experience but got here through a different entry point.

Now you might be thinking No fear? Sounds nice but how do you do that? I experience fear all the time.

Well, this is a topic Sean and I unpack in this conversation as well as other “sounds nice but how” concepts like the recognition of not being a body, but having one.

Now that I’m going to be a parent soon, I can’t help but wonder about how all this technology is going to impact my kiddo?

And what can I do about it to help them be happy, heathy, and prosperous?

I recently discovered the work of Sara Filipcic who spent years studying the impact of technology on children and now has started a new company to help improve the situation called BeHumane.

Her research painted somewhat of a dire picture that made it clear that we as a society need to do something about this:

  • Adolescents using devices 5 or more hours a day (vs. 1 hour) were 66% more likely to have at least one suicide-related outcome1

  • Results of a 2016 Common Sense Media Report found that 50% of teens “feel addicted” to mobile devices, while 59% of parents surveyed believe that kids are addicted to their devices2

  • Seven-in-ten U.S. teens said anxiety and depression is a major problem among people their age in the community where they live3

  • Technology can negatively affect children's developing social skills, relationships, health, and overall ability to focus, developing their social skills. This can lead to more children being socially awkward, withdrawn, shy, or intimidated by social situations.4

Going deep into this area of study there were many more subtle “aha” moments that helped her form her vision for BeHumane which aims to teach kids how to use technology effectively.

The nervous system is the lens through which you experience the world.

This quote really hit home for me from this weeks episode with Jonny Miller, founder of Nervous System Mastery and the Curious Humans Podcast and blog.

The nervous system seems to be intimately related to energy in our bodies. As electrical beings, this shouldn’t come as a massive surprise. I wanted to learn more about this which is why I was very excited to have Jonny who is a nervous system expert on the show.

I’ve learned many hard lessons on overtaxing my nervous system due to my spiritual ambition which has resulted in lots of discomfort over the years. In many instances, this was due to engaging in practices I thought were supposed to help aid my transformation like breathwork and other somatic release techniques. 🧐

What I see now and discuss with Jonny, was how I was missing a the imperative long integration and re-patterning period after big releases. I also generally overdid it. Shocker.

There also proves to be an immense amount of nuance in truly relaxing into a sensation vs. trying to focus on it and push it out. Learning this is practically a whole skill in itself. Again, this took me years of doing it wrong and enduring subsequent physical difficulties to truly understand.

If you are doing any somatic work, this is a must listen episode. The depth of understanding that Jonny has is truly amazing and the language he uses to communicate complex concepts is wonderful. Did I mention he has a charming British accent?!

It's abundantly clear that we are experiencing a massive increase in consciousness amongst our respective societies and cultures. Many spiritual people get very enthusiastic about discussing the "global awakening" or "move to the fifth dimension," though I have no idea about the reality of these things. I am just genuinely excited that it appears more people are interested in the inner path to greater levels of peace, joy, creativity, and wisdom that comes with the expansion of consciousness.

With this shift, we will need new technologies and services that are better suited to ushering and supporting these changes as I wrote about here. Many investors have noticed this and started to focus on investment theses that revolve around new companies that facilitate the expansion of consciousness. Whenever I want to learn about new and interesting innovations, I often turn to investor friends because their job is essentially to learn about all this stuff.

This is why I was interested in talking to my new friend Greg Kubin, who is a partner at Psymed Ventures and a guest on EvolutionFM. Psymed focuses on investing in technologies that elevate mental health and wellness, including psychedelics, neurotech, precision psychiatry, and digital therapeutics.

I was eager to talk to Greg to learn about new things, but also to get the perspective of someone who must balance the constraints of capitalism and what is best for humans.

We discussed a range of topics, including the psychedelic investment tension, precision psychiatry (which I had never even heard of), and the pros and cons of neurotech that claims to drop people into jhanas or enlightened states. I found it to be a fun and interesting conversation.

If the business of psychedelics is interesting to you, Greg runs a podcast exclusively focused on it called Business Trip. There are some great episodes on there exploring all different types of business models to make a living with psychedelics.

Did you know every mammal including humans produces DMT naturally in their bodies? The same can be said for 1,000’s of plants.

I wanted to make sure you knew this before anyone wrote this off as a psychedelics or “drugs” conversation which is often the cultural association with DMT.

Right now there is a massive disconnect between mystical experiences and the world of Science. The gap is closing, but it often still feels like there’s these two camps who speak in different languages.

What we need is a bridge!

And that bridge just might be a greater understanding Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). You might have the heard of DMT because it’s the active psychedelic agent in things like Ayahuasca. But as I alluded too in the intro, it’s also produced naturally in every mammal and most plants! In fact, we have just as much DMT in our systems as serotonin.

John Chavez is the founder of DMTQuest which is an organization that is helping push forward the much needed research and education around DMT. Through financing studies and creating a media that educates and amplifies the potentiality of understanding this substance, he is helping us answer these questions.

John’s story is a fascinating one that in some ways mirrors my own. He had a radical and spontaneous mystical experience that redirected him to pursue answering and understanding the greater truths about the human experience.

One of my closest friends Justin Mares knows more about health then just about anyone I know. He’s built 3 food companies in Kettle & Fire, Perfect Keto, and Surely Wines which give him unique insight into how the stuff we put into our bodies is actually made. Now he is working on new company called True Medicine that is making it easier and more affordable to be healthy.

I’ve been a long time follower of his newsletter @  and a few years ago he started sharing staggering information on what is happening to the U.S. population's health citing our food system as a culprit.

Let me start off by saying, I have zero interest in participating in what many call the transhuman movement. Specifically, implanting some type of technology into my body in order to alter or enhance the way in which I experience the world.

That being said, I do think it’s important to understand what is going on. This is clearly going to be a thing in our lifetimes that will vastly impact culture and society and I’d rather be informed. A few weeks ago someone had recommended Singularity Weekly to me and I was startled to see how far along we are in this field.

I wanted to have Joe Allen the author of singularity weekly and Steven Bannon’s War Room transhuman expert.

The most interesting thing that emerged from the conversation was the realization that transhumanism is very much a religion. There is a group of people that are attempting to transcend their current condition and achieve salvation. In these higher states, they also strive to achieve greater abilities of unity and access to higher intelligence.

Gee. Sounds kind of like most wisdom traditions. I guess the main difference is the mechanism they believe will usher into this change is technology. Joe called this worship of technology as our savior an inversion of spirituality. I tend to agree, but this new understanding certainly helped me better understand what is more fundamentally driving the leaders of these movements.

I can’t say that my opinion has really shifted. I am increasingly getting excited about living a more analog life. Having less technology dominates my experience and generally being more connected to nature. This probably means I will have to move from my urban existence at some point, but I am okay with that. I increasingly think living in Urban areas with high degrees of invisible environmental toxins make it harder to be healthier than it needs to be. And I care more about myself and family being healthy than nice dinners with friends and access to luxury experiences. I think we will start to see this appeal to more and more urban professionals in the next decade. I guess we already are.

It can be quite frustrating to be experiencing something unfamiliar that our medical system doesn’t have an answer for. Unfortunately, I know from experience as documented here!

This is very common with many “spiritual”, “mystical”, “energetic”, etc. experiences and effects, that are often referred to as emergent phenomena.

A few months ago, I was delighted to discover the The Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium. The EPRC is a group of 180+ researchers, scientists, medical, therapy and spiritual professionals that are trying to tackle the hard problem of gathering data and research on the large catalogue of emergent phenomena experiences that humans may face and the efficacy of different protocols for handling them.

Daniel Ingram is one of the co-founders of the organization and also the author of one my favorite books on Buddhism Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha.

The EPRC’s aim is to give health care systems, mental health providers, and those who are helping to teach and promote various practices the information they need in order to make better decisions about how to both promote the benefits of these practices and manage the various effects that they can produce.

This week’s episode is with my good friend Zach Poitra who I have worked with in a Shamanic capacity for 3 separate ayahuasca retreats.

Zach’s story is amazing. After working for an investment bank for 10 years, he moved down to Peru to live in the jungle and work on himself. What he thought would be a temporary stint transpired into him meeting and training with his shamanic teacher for 4.5 years before becoming a full-time shaman himself. Now after many years helping others with their own inward work, he has felt a calling to re-enter the world of finance which was something he would have never anticipated.

He provides an inside look at what the life of a Shaman is actually like demystifying a lot of common misconceptions I know I originally had. We also talk about his inner experience of being guided to return to finance which too many, seemed like a surprising move. Personally, I think its a fantastic example of surrendering to the universe and when we do this things often take different forms then what we would have expected.

My friend Robby Bent joins us to talk about his amazing online / offline company Othership. A lot of people are turned off by wellness and mindfulness in the current way it is packaged and introduced. Robbie and his team have incredible perspective to this dynamic and are taking a different approach with their physical Othership locations and amazing breathwork app which I love. By focusing on creating something that's cool and avoiding all the spiritual woo woo, they are casting a wider net to these powerful practices that ultimately drive transformation.

This episode dives into the topic of achievement and how we can approach the art of “happily achieving”

Its funny - a lot of us are really quick to ask ourselves what we want without ever asking what we’re willing to give up for that which is a much greater predictor of whether will get those things and enjoy the process along the way.

This episode is a bit all over the place, but Mark shares some mindsets that have helped him in his own entrepreneurial journey in growing one of the largest self-development sites on the internet. Resiliency, values, and overcoming fear are just a few of the topics we’’ll go deep on. Consider this required listening for anyone who wants to be their best selves. Let’s hear from Mark Manson.
